BELFAST (AP) — Maine lawmakers and environmentalists are seeking a comprehensive study of a proposal to dredge part of Penobscot Bay.

Sen. Chris Johnson of Somerville, Rep. Walter Kumiega of Deer Isle and Rep. Mick Devin of Newcastle are joining members of the Sierra Club of Maine and others in Belfast on Wednesday.

They want the Army Corps of Engineers to conduct a full study on the environmental impacts of the proposal to dredge Searsport Harbor.

The Sierra Club of Maine said the plan to dump the spoils of the dredging project into Penobscot Bay will have serious environmental and economic impacts by threatening the lobster and endangered Atlantic Sturgeon in the area.
