ELLSWORTH — A Veazie man was charged with gross sexual assault in connection with an incident that reportedly occurred in Bucksport in August.

Charles Francis Piatt, 27, admitted to having sex with the victim, though he told police he did not know she was 13, according to court documents. However, the documents also indicate that the alleged victim and her mother both say they told Piatt the girl’s age.

The victim’s mother reported the alleged assault to police Oct. 11, after she heard about it from one of her daughter’s teachers.

Court documents revealed that Piatt and the victim met at the Bangor State Fair this year. The two reportedly had conversations over the phone, which lead to meetings and eventually the meeting where the alleged assault took place.

The girl also told police that Piatt had given her alcohol.

Piatt was arrested Nov. 1, taken to Penobscot County Jail, transferred to Hancock County Jail, and has since been bailed out, according to Hancock County Assistant District Attorney Mary Kellett. Bail was set at $500, and Piatt was ordered not to have contact with children under 16. He is due in court Jan. 6, 2014.

If convicted of the Class A crime, Piatt faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000
