FAYETTE — Voters will face a referendum Tuesday, Nov. 5, asking if they want the School Committee to develop a plan to withdraw from the alternative school district, which includes Winthrop.
Voting will take place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Starling Hall on Route 17.
Fayette and Winthrop residents voted in 2010 to restructure administration into an Alternative Organizational Structure.
Approval of the referendum question would be the first step in the process of returning administrative functions of the school to control of Fayette, according to information posted on www.fayettemaine.org.
Fayette and Winthrop formed AOS 97 on July 1, 2010. Prior to that, Fayette functioned as its own municipal school district for 16 years.
According to a subcommittee report that studied the possible Fayette withdrawal, the cost of leaving is unlikely to be more than $4,000 of a total $1.5 million school budget. The panel believes it would be a 0.2 percent increase at most and the benefits of withdrawal exceed the cost, according to the report.
