LIVERMORE FALLS — Two people were injured late Wednesday in a fire at their residence at 99 West Loop. It is believed the fire was started by improper disposal of wood stove ashes, Livermore Falls fire Chief Tim “TD” Hardy said Thursday morning.

Led Crosby and Jenna Presby were awakened by a smoke detector. They broke a bedroom window and climbed out of the burning mobile home, he said.

Both were taken by NorthStar EMS ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington with non life-threatening injuries, he said. They were treated and released.

About 40 firefighters from Livermore Falls, Jay and Livermore responded to the fire, which was reported to be engulfed in flames at 9:50 p.m., he said.

Neither the couple nor owner of the home, Walt Whitman of Livermore Falls, had insurance.

State fire investigator Mark Roberts visited the site Thursday morning to determine the cause.

The wood stove ashes were placed in a 5-gallon plastic bucket outside the home, Hardy said. It is believed that is what caused the fire, he said.

He credited a smoke detector with saving the lives of the occupants, he said.

The mobile home was destroyed.
