MEXICO – The Board of Selectmen held a public hearing Tuesday on the mobile home park and mobile home ordinance that will go before voters Nov. 5.
The ordinance was updated after the Planning Board decided it needed stricter conditions.
Selectman Reggie Arsenault, who is also a member of the Planning Board, said the board had been working on the mobile home ordinance “for seven or eight months now.”
“The mobile home ordinance hasn’t been updated since the last time that the town updated the Comprehensive Plan, and that was almost 20 years ago,” he said. “The changes we made to the ordinance gives it a little more teeth for new trailers or trailer parks coming into town.”
Arsenault said changes included requiring trailers to have pitched and shingled roofs, changing the setback distance from the front of a lot to 35 feet from the centerline of a park road, and requiring a mobile home to be placed on a permanent foundation that matches the conditions set forth by the Planning Board.
“It looks like you guys did a really good job on this. You addressed a lot of the concerns that we had going into this,” Town Manager John Madigan told Arsenault.
Arsenault said the ordinance will pertain to any new trailers or trailer parks moving into town.
“We can’t really do anything about the lots that are already in place, but the new ones that come in will have to conform to the new ordinance if it’s passed,” he said.
Also Tuesday, selectmen approved junkyard permits for Dick’s Auto Sales and Cogley’s Auto Parts.
In other business, selectmen voted to donate money to the Renaissance Program at Mountain Valley Middle School.
“Last year, we decided that instead of giving money in the name of the town, we, as selectmen, would donate money ourselves,” Chairman Richie Philbrick. “Is that something you guys want to do again this year?”
After the board agreed, Philbrick pulled out his wallet and placed $20 on the table.
“There, we’re already at $20,” Philbrick said, and by the end of the meeting, selectmen had raised $60.
