I live in Buckfield. My taxes went up another $200 this year.

A few years ago I formed a concerned citizens group in an attempt to cap the mill rate at 20. A lot of people were in agreement, but unfortunately, more people weren’t.

I said back then that before long people wouldn’t be able to afford to live in this town, where I grew up and which I love with all my heart.

Has anyone noticed the number of houses for sale just in the village alone, to say nothing about the outlying areas? I know two families that are being forced to move because they can no longer afford to live here, and I fear there will be more to follow.

While I am in total agreement that a new fire station was needed, I think the elaborate plans are a bit much.

My whole point is that if townspeople and officials don’t wake up and smell the coffee (which will be a treat in itself — who can afford coffee after paying their tax bill?), we are going to be in big trouble.

The tax bill will be enormous for the 20 people left living in town after the rest of us smarten up and get the heck out of here.

For those who didn’t vote to cap the mill rate, don’t bother waving to me when you pull up beside me in your U-haul, I will be too busy driving my own to wave back.

Alma Jordan, Buckfield
