JAY — Police charged two men involved in an accident Saturday morning on Route 156 where a vehicle was in a ditch with no one around.

James M. Martin, 36, of Jay was found in a ditch about 200 yards from the accident and arrested by Officer Michael Mejia on charges of operating under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident, Jay police Sgt. Troy Young said.

Martin was found by Franklin County Sheriff’s Cpl. Nate Bean and his tracking dog, Diesel, Young said.

Martin was released from a Farmington jail on $3,000 unsecured bail.

Later Saturday, Michael Couillard, 37, of Wilton, came to the Police Station to report he was the registered owner of the vehicle and the one driving at the time of the accident just after midnight near Soules Hill Road, Young said.

Couillard was issued a summons on a misdemeanor charge of failure to report an accident by the quickest means.

Mejia issued Martin a summons Tuesday on a misdemeanor charge of hindering apprehension or prosecution, Young said.

The District Attorney’s Office will review the case, he said.
