Don Penly and his wife, Deb Garner, make a rubbing of Capt. John Penley’s gravestone at the Penley Corner Church cemetery in Auburn on Tuesday. Penly, a fourth-generation great-grandson of Joseph Penly, and Garner made the trip from their home in of Madison, Wis., to the cemetery on Riverside Drive while doing genealogy research on Penly’s family. John Penley donated the land for the cemetery and the church in 1833. The church holds an all-faiths service one day each year. Don Penly said he did not know why some ancestors’ last names are spelled Penly and others, Penley.
