Family:

My wife and I met while I was stationed at Grissom Air Force Base in Indiana. We have been married for 45 years, have two sons, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. We operate a Day Care in our home and enjoy many different aspects of life.

Public offices sought or held?

I was asked to run for school committee during the re-evaluation in Auburn a few years ago. I was defeated during a re-election attempt and then elected again on my third attempt.

Civic organizations:

New Auburn Social Club, Pastime Club, I am a Steward for the Barker Arms Trail in conjunction with the Androscoggin Land Trust and L/A Trails. A member of Auburn’s Park Watch Program, A member of the New Auburn Village Center Study, a member of the New Auburn Village Association and also many committees and sub-committees associated with the school department.

What is your favorite food?

This time of the year that would be corn on the cob from Bell Farms. I also enjoy a tender steak now and again.

What is your favorite movie?

One of my favorites would be “The Godfather”.

What is your favorite book?

The Jack Reacher series by Lee Child.

What is the best political advice you have received?

“Don’t let anyone deter you from what you feel in your heart is right”.

What Maine political figure do you admire most?

Senator Olympia Snowe. She always stood by her convictions and never let the people of Maine and this country down.

Local politics

What has Mayor Jonathan LaBonte done during the past two years that you agree with? What has he done that you disagree with?

When first elected to office, he made a point to express his feelings of being an advocate for education, as did other councilors. Now that nearly two years has passed, I don’t feel that some of his very negative comments have helped our quest to find common ground so the council and school committee can all work for the common good of this community.

What has the city council done during the past two years that you agree with? What have they done that you disagree with?

I think they have done their best not to impact our taxes while keeping as many city services as possible. However at times I feel they have been a split group that has not always been on the same page when dealing with certain issues or did not all seem prepared to deal with those issues.

What has the city manager and the city staff done during the past two years that you agree with? What have they done that you disagree with?

I think that overall they have done a great job running our city, even with the occasional mixed messages from council.

What has the school committee done during the past two years that you agree with? What have they done that you disagree with?

I believe that Mass Customized Learning is a huge step in the right direction on our journey to educate our students. I like the fact that we are continuing our commitment with the iPad program and that we haven’t given up on building a new high school. At the moment I cannot think of any issue that we voted on that I disagree with.

What is your solution for Auburn’s high school?

At one of our E.L. steering committee meetings, someone suggested that “You can teach kids in a tent if you have to.” I am hoping that with the help of the state, we can provide them with something much better than a tent: A place of learning that our city and state can be proud of.

Any last words?

I am certainly not in this for the glory or the big bucks, but that I care deeply about all our children from pre-K to grade 12 and hope that with our help they can achieve their dreams in this ever changing world.
