AUBURN — American Legion, William J. Rogers Post 153, at 71 South Main St., will hold a public spaghetti supper from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, to celebrate Navy Day.

The Navy League of the United States organized the first Navy Day in 1922, holding it on Oct. 27, the birthday of President Theodore Roosevelt.

In the 1970s, the “birthday” of the Continental Navy was found to be Oct. 13, 1775, and so CNO Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt worked with the Navy League to define Oct. 13 as the new date of Navy Day. However, Navy Day in the United States is still largely recognized as Oct. 27.

The proceeds will help support the post’s many programs to the youth from scholarships to legion baseball, said Paul R. Bernard, commander of the post.

For additional information on the event or membership, contact the post at 782-1118 or email post153@megalink.net or send mail to New Auburn American Legion, William J. Rogers Post 153, 71 South Main St., Auburn, ME 04210, attention Commander.
