On Nov. 5, Lisbon residents will vote on bond issues totalling $3.4 million.

Question 1 seeks approval for the purchase of the Worumbo Mill sites, with demolition or renovation intended.

Question 2 is a bond for $1.75 million for a new water tank. It is the first of two requests by the Lisbon Water Department.

Its second project, Question 3 on the ballot, is to replace water mains on Frost Hill Avenue and Old Lisbon Road at a cost of $650,000.

After attending countless meetings during the past 32 months, I can assure Lisbon voters that the current water tanks are in excellent condition and well-maintained. There is not a need, at this time, for a 55-foot concrete monolith on the corner of Route 9 and Upland Road, where it would be an eyesore for travelers and residents alike.

That area offers the best views in the town of Lisbon and affords the passing motorist a moment of reflection on why people live in Maine. The addition of that tank, with resulting tree loss, would create a truly abhorrent vista.

These are tough times, with high living costs and folks struggling to make ends meet. Why would Lisbon voters want to make an unnecessary, costly mistake that would endure for a hundred years and raise both water usage rates and local taxes?

I will vote “no” on Question 2.
