Stubborn behavior in a child can be challenging for parents. When faced with a stubborn youngster, parents can grow frustrated easily. These reactions may be understandable but may not bode well for addressing the situation. While a child’s stubbornness can raise a parent’s ire, thinking about it from a different frame of mind may shed new light on such behavior.
First, realize that a child who is stubborn feels comfortable enough in his or her own skin and has enough confidence and independence to think for himself or herself. Children may act stubbornly if they feel they are not being heard by their parents or if their opinions are not valued.
Making small, safe concessions to children may alleviate stubbornness. Letting the children choose his or her own clothing rather than laying out school outfits for them or giving them a choice at the breakfast table can reduce stubbornness. Also, always praise positive behavior rather than reinforcing negative behavior
