LEWISTON — One man was stabbed and another injured in a downtown fracas Thursday night on Ash Street, police said.
Shortly before 7 p.m., police were called to the corner of Ash and Howard streets for a fight. Minutes later, witnesses said, a man was seen stumbling down Howard before collapsing a few blocks away on Walnut Street.
That man was taken to Central Maine Medical Center. Police, meanwhile were searching along Ash and Howard streets, following trails of blood while searching for other victims and potential suspects.
Most witnesses in the area reported seeing nothing of significance: They heard some yelling, they said, followed by several people running away and seconds later, police arriving from all directions.
By 7:30 p.m., police had cordoned off a section of the street at the corner of Ash and Howard. Several officers were searching between buildings while others were speaking with neighbors.
A witness said one of the combatants might have run into an apartment house on Ash Street as police were arriving, although that could not be verified.
Later Thursday night, police said there were two victims as a result of the scrap, but there was no further information about the condition of the men.
A Lewiston police detective was called to investigate and was interviewing witnesses late Thursday night.
