JAY — A boil-water order has been issued until further notice to customers of Jay Village Water District who lost water due to a line break Sunday in the Smith Avenue area. It is the second boil order within two weeks.

The district’s area from Stone Street to part way up Jay Hill on Route 4 has been plagued with numerous breaks for about three weeks.

Superintendent Mike Wells said Tuesday that everybody had water Sunday but it had to be shut off Monday to make the repair. Water was turned back on by noon. The system got dewatered, and that is why the boil order was put in place, he said.

Affected customers should boil water for one minute. That includes water that they plan to drink, use to brush their teeth and make ice cubes.

After the water is boiled, it can be put in the refrigerator, Wells said.

He is taking water samples to a laboratory in Augusta to be tested for E. coli and coliform bacteria.

The waterlines are aging and are believed to be at least 60 years old.

The Smith Avenue area lines are slated to be repaired in 2014.
