A 19-year-old man shot and killed himself in the parking lot of Gray-New Gloucester High School on Saturday afternoon while several sports events were taking place, according to Capt. Shawn O’Leary of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

By late Saturday night, police have not released the name of the man. Fryeburg Academy Head of School Erin Mayo confirmed that he was a Fryeburg Academy graduate.

“This is just a tremendous loss to this whole community and we really feel deeply for his family and friends,” she said.

Police received a call about a possible suicide at the school about 12:50 p.m., O’Leary said in a news release. They found the teenager dead in the parking lot.

No one else was hurt.

School officials canceled all school-related activities for the rest of Saturday. Several sports teams were at the high school Saturday, including teams from Fryeburg Academy.

Fryeburg Academy made counselors available to the school community members Saturday and planned to have counselors available Sunday.

On Monday, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office identified the individual as Gaige K. McGue, 19, of Denmark.
