The Sun Journal article on Sept. 15 about heating fuels used in Maine was very informative; however, I was disappointed that climate change was never mentioned. Using renewable fuels can go a long way toward reducing climate change.
Switching from oil, propane, natural gas or electric heat to wood or wood pellet heat can reduce a family’s carbon footprint tremendously, as much as 50 percent. For me, that was a major reason for changing my heating system.
I think Mainers care enough about the environment to make heating decisions based not just on the dollar costs of the fuels we choose, but also on the environmental costs.
Burning fossil fuels puts carbon into the atmosphere that does not go away for millions of years. Burning wood participates in the natural carbon cycle involving growing trees and the atmosphere.
