Dr. H.B. Pulsifer, Prospect hill, Auburn, has a mystery on his hands and is perfectly willing that any of the local sleuths, Hawkshaws, Sherlock Holmes, Nick Carter or other solvers of difficult problems shall tackle it and inform him as to what became of his potatoes. Wednesday he prepared eight bushels of as fine spuds as were ever seen in these parts for delivery. They were tied up in bags and the doctor felt rather proud of the job. For a few moments his attention was called to another part of the place. When he returned with the rig ready to start on the delivery tour the potatoes were gone, bags and all. Diligent search failed to bring them to light. No trace of them has been secured since. Dr. Pulsifer says that the worst feature of the case is that he hasn’t the slightest idea of whom to charge them to.

A truck for use at forest and woods fires will be put into use in the future by the Auburn Fire Department. Fire Chief J. Coleman Miller said a three-quarter ton weapons carrier, obtained for $60 from military surplus through Civil Defense, will be renovated by his department for use as a forestry truck. The truck will be equipped with a quantity of Indian tanks for use against forest and brush fires, plus other necessary equipment. The design of the four-wheel drive truck makes it capable of transporting a sizable capacity of men in addition to equipment. A second similar truck is being kept at the Auburn Highway Department garage for spare parts.

Dan Works of Auburn repeated as winner of the Mt. Washington bike race Sunday, defeating a field of 300 riders in the uphill go on the 6,000-foot mountain. The distance is estimated at a little less than eight miles. He led most of the way and reported fog and gusty winds made visibility difficult and light rain created a muddy road. He estimated the windchill factor at a probably 20 degrees. Two other Twin Cities bikers were in the competition and one, Jason LoBozzo Jr. of Lewiston, was second in the junior age-division. Steve Goodman Auburn, also competed.
