BROOKSVILLE — A fire of unknown origin destroyed a Brooksville home Saturday morning, fire officials reported.

The 2-1/2 story house, located on Ferry Road, was a total loss, reported Brooksville Volunteer Fire Department Chief Matt Dow.

“There’s absolutely nothing left,” he said. “It had a head start.”

The home was of older construction, and Ferry Road is a dead end and somewhat difficult to access, noted Dow. The building was situated about 50-75 feet from the road.

A neighbor who saw smoke and initially thought it was a grass fire, reported the fire to the sheriff’s office at 8:12 p.m., said Dow.

By the time firefighters arrived at the scene, the second story already had collapsed onto the first floor, he said.

The owners of the house, who were not identified, were not at home at the time, according to Dow.

“We have no idea at this time,” said Dow when asked about the cause of the fire.

“At this time, I would have to say it appears accidental,” he said.

No injuries were reported.

It took firefighters about 90 minutes to two hours to knock down the flames, according to Dow. The fire was completely under control after about three hours.

State Fire Marshall personnel were on the scene investigating, said Dow.

Fire departments from Deer Island, Sedgwick, Blue Hill, Brooklin, Orland and Penobscot assisted in fighting the blaze.

The couple who lived in the home were in contact with relatives about obtaining temporary shelter, said Dow.
