Soliciting funds is not my forte in life. However, after seeing the destruction in Lac-Megantic first-hand, I was not only compelled, but felt it my duty to see if people here could raise a few dollars to help those people out. I feel strongly that they would have done the same for us.

All that being said, if people have not donated as yet, there is still time.

I would like to thank all those folks who have stepped up and assisted in the humanitarian effort for Lac-Megantic. It goes without saying that without public support, we could not have accomplished what we set out to do.

We have done our duty and Wednesday, Sept. 11, will be the last day to donate to that very worthy cause.

I am very happy to announce that through the public’s generosity, we have currently raised more than $16,000. That money will go a long way toward helping the children and families in Lac-Megantic.

The money will be delivered to the Canadian National Red Cross on Wednesday, Sept. 18. I will personally deliver the funds and I will express our sincere hope for a speedy recovery.

Once again, to all who have been able to help in this endeavor, our heartfelt thanks and appreciation.

Stephen Philbrick, Oquossoc, president, Rangeley Lakes Chamber of Commerce
