WINTHROP  —  The return to varsity football for students from Monmouth Academy will have to wait another day.

Due a malfunction Friday with the lights at Maxwell Field, the Lisbon at Winthrop/Monmouth game was postponed until Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

A local electrical company attempted to get the lights to come on, but to no avail. A few minutes after the scheduled 7 p.m. start time, first-year Winthrop athletic director Chris Moreau informed the game officials the issue would not be an easy fix.

Moreau, officials and two head coaches met for a few minutes at midfield to decide on the time to re-schedule the game. Not knowing if the lights would be ready in time for Saturday night played into the decision.

“They need some time to work on them,” said Moreau.

READFIELD — Dirigo intercepted Maranacook five times, including Riley Robinson’s second takeaway in the end zone with just over two minutes remaining Friday night, to eke out a 13-8 Western Class D football win at Ricky Gibson Memorial Field of Dreams.

Defense and special teams carried the Cougars. In addition to Robinson’s two picks, Tyler Frost, Zach Demars and Kaine Hutchins each had one.

Frost’s interception sealed the game in the closing seconds, but that one was deep in Maranacook territory.

Joe Casey blocked a first-quarter punt that Frost recovered in the end zone for a 6-0 lead. Gavin Arsenault’s 63-yard punt return and Demars’ extra point made it a 13-0 halftime edge.

Maranacook recovered a loose ball on the second half kickoff and converted Chris Robinson’s recovery into its only scoring drive. Simon Davis supplied the 10-yard scoring run. Logan Emery rushed for the two points.

Heath Hersom was Dirigo’s leading gainer with 12 carries for 50 yards. Robinson had 70 yard on the ground for the Black Bears.

Poland 6, Lake Region 0

POLAND —  Poland stopped Lake Region on downs inside the 20-yard line with just over three minutes remaining Friday night to secure a 6-0 Western Class C football victory.

The Knights made a touchdown on their second drive of the night stand as the winning points.

Patrick Jacques scored on a broken play, bobbling the snap before scampering 12 yards around the right side to the end zone.

Lake Region forced three turnovers in a game effort after its starting quarterback was sidelined with an ankle injury.
