Jose Gumbs, who played football at Hebron Academy, will open the season on the Washington Redskins’ 53-man roster, and possibly see his first regular season game action next Monday.

Gumbs, a 2007 Hebron graduate, will play safety for the Redskins, who open their season Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Redskins signed the 5-foot-10, 210-pound Gumbs as a free agent on July 25. Thought to be a long-shot to make the team by most D.C.-area media, the Queens, NY native impressed head coach Mike Shanahan in training camp.

“Gumbs came in and competed,” Shanahan said earlier this week. “That’s what we tell these players: We don’t care if you’re a first-round draft choice or a free agent, we’re gonna play the best players. Gumbs came in and played well, and he earned himself a roster spot.”

Gumbs, 25, played tailback and free safety for three years at Hebron, leading the team with 110 tackles his senior year and earning team MVP and All-New England honors.

He went on to play collegiately at Monmouth University, where he was a four-year starter from 2008-11. He led the Hawks in tackles all four seasons and finished third in school history with 306 tackles (188 solo).

The Redskins are Gumbs’ third NFL team since coming into the league last year. He was originally signed by the New Orleans Saints as a college free agent in April, 2012, but was injured in their final preseason game and cut a few days later. The Kansas City Chiefs signed him to their practice squad in December, then released him last May.
