BUCKFIELD — A town meeting to organize a withdrawal committee from Regional School Unit 10 will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, at the Municipal Center.

The town is one of 12 in RSU 10 that was formed in 2009 by merging SAD 39 in Buckfield, SAD 21 in Dixfield and SAD 43 in Rumford. The other towns are Canton, Carthage, Dixfield, Peru, Hartford, Sumner, Byron, Mexico, Roxbury, Rumford and Hanover.

On March 19, Buckfield selectmen accepted a petition to withdraw submitted by Judy Berg and signed by 137 residents. A public hearing was held April 9.

The purpose of Thursday’s meeting, according to Berg, is to organize a committee and choose a chairman to begin the withdrawal process, which is spelled out in state law. She said she hopes the committee will be able to gather information to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages for the town being in RSU 10.

Berg said school taxes have increased 33.9 percent since the town joined the RSU 10 in 2009.

She also said she hopes for a waiver from immediate implementation of withdrawal so they can determine what Sumner and Hartford plan to do.
