Let everyone in Lewiston and Auburn walk down Lisbon Street tonight as far as the Novelty Cloak Store and see the new electric light and trolley pole, which is being installed there. A story goes with this new and improved form of lighting and it begins with a trip to the south by John T. McCarthy of the L.A. & W. St. R.R. Co. In Atlanta, Georgia, Mr. McCarthy saw the remarkable effect gained by the city of Atlanta in the street lighting along Peach Tree Avenue. He came home enthusiastic over the idea. He brought the matter before the Merchants Association. It seemed a good idea to him because to did away with all the crude and ugly wooden poles. The new design is a pole of iron, slender but strong, carrying on a curved arm four globes and also carrying the trolley wires. The electric road will pay for half if the city will light them. The poles carry the fire alarm and the United States letter boxes and the police signal system. The plan is to install them about 100 feet apart thus making an expense of about $10 for each 25 foot lot.
