LEWISTON — Near the end of the previous school year, Mrs. Carla Gill’s class at Farwell Elementary School continued their lessons on Kids in Community at Davinci’s Eatery and Walmart.
Her students had been learning about what role they have in society and how they can best position themselves to make a difference in their community. As they learn about their community, they learn about the many employment opportunities that will be available to them as they grow into adulthood.
Students learned about how to dress appropriately for work, understanding social cues, using proper manners and types of jobs. These lessons are all connected to literacy, mathematics, social studies and consumer skills. They are connecting the dots between what they need to learn in school today and how it will affect them in their futures.
Several Walmart managers provided an extensive overview of their personal timeline from school to work. Each manager shared that hard work, respect and having goals made a difference on their path to success.
Through generous donations from Lewiston Education Fund and Walmart each student was provided with money to purchase a “get-a-job” outfit. Learning about pricing, clothing, money management and making decisions is all part of their functional life skills education.
At Davinci’s Eatery, dining manager Stephanie Woodworth provided an extensive tour and informational lessons on how a restaurant works. She taught the students about the many types of jobs that are needed to make a restaurant successful. Woodworth taught about food safety, suppliers (more jobs) and why a local business is very important to a community.
Mrs. Gill and staff (Mrs. Linda Gosselin, Mrs. Nicole Lemay and Mrs. Heather Carr) and their students were able to make connections that each one of them is vital to the success of their community.
