AUBURN — City candidates are down to their last day to confirm a spot on November’s municipal ballots.

Nominations for candidates seeking seats on the City Council and School Committee, and for the mayor’s job close at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 22.

Of the 29 people who have taken out nomination papers, 21 have returned them and confirmed spots on the ballot. That includes at least one candidate for every elected seat in the city. Ward 5 will see former Councilor Ray Berube challenge incumbent Leroy Walker for his seat.

City Clerk Sue Clements-Dallaire said several people have taken out nomination papers for the open seats, but had not turned them in as of Wednesday afternoon.

They include former City Councilors Dan Herrick and Joe Gray, who have taken out papers for seats on council and the School Committee but haven’t returned any signatures. Herrick has taken out papers for the council and school seats in Ward 3. Gray has taken out papers for one of two open at-large seats on the council and the Ward 5 seat on the School Committee.

Unless candidates step forward, Mayor Jonathan LaBonte, Ward 1 Councilor Tizz Crowley, Ward 2 Councilor Robert Hayes, Ward 3 Councilor Mary Lafontaine, and Ward 4 candidate Adam Lee will face no official challengers on the November ballot.

On the School Committee side, Ward 1 candidate Mike Farrell, Ward 2 incumbent Bonnie Hayes, Ward 3 incumbent Tom Kendall, Ward 4 incumbent Tracey Levesque and Ward 5 incumbent Larry Pelletier have no challengers on the ballot.

Nomination papers are available at the City Clerk’s office in Auburn Hall. All 15 elected positions are up this November. That includes the five ward councilors, two at-large councilors, the mayor and all School Committee members.

Auburn candidates have until Auburn Hall closes Thursday to collect signatures for their nominating petitions. Candidates for mayor need to collect at least 100 signatures from registered voters living anywhere in Auburn. Candidates for City Council or the School Committee need to collect 25 signatures — from anywhere in the city for at-large candidates or from within individual wards for ward candidates.

According to City Charter, terms for Auburn’s elected officials begin 45 days after the election, or Dec. 20, 2013.
