NORWAY — The Board of Selectmen has approved a request by a local ATV club to use two sections of town road for its trail system.

Ken Gammon, president of the Oxford Hills ATV Trail Blazers, told selectmen Thursday night that he would like to use a section of Crockett Ridge Road, approximately .2 of a mile northeast of the Rick Morse farm. The route then turns right onto Cross Road for approximately .5 of a mile. The trail continues from the end of Cross Road onto Larson Road for approximately .2 of a mile.

Gammon said the section of public road he is requesting starts about .2 of a mile northeast from the Nobles Corner intersection on Round the Pond Road and continues about .7 of a mile on Greenwood Road to a trail head.

The first section of requested town road would be permanent trail. The second section would be temporary until the club can create a route through the woods.

Gammon said the trails would be accessed from about May 15 through Dec. 15 by ATVs and probably would not be used until next year after signs are erected on the trails.

Police Chief Rob Federico said he has surveyed both sections and sees no substantial public safety issues, according to a letter from Federico to the selectmen.

Gammon said the club has had trails for about 20 years and has lost very little of them.

Town Manager David Holt suggested the board approve the request on a trial basis.
