PERU — The Board of Selectmen on Monday awarded a paving contract to Bruce Manzer of Anson for $65,154.56.
The award was recommended by Road Commissioner Joe Roach. Manzer had the lowest of three bids for paving 1,500 feet on either side of the intersection of Gammon and Mineral Springs roads.
Bids for auditing were also opened but a decision was tabled until next week to allow Town Clerk Vera Parent to review the details.
A permit was approved for Betty White to replace an old garage with a 10-by-16-foot shed on Main Street.
The board asked Secretary Angela Barkhouse to see if there are any people on a list to apply for a septic replacement grant.
The board discussed a townwide property revaluation. Board of Selectmen Chairman Jim Pulsifer said they needed to get an article on a warrant for November soon if they were going to do the revaluation.
Selectman Danny Wing said he thought they should. Pulsifer said they had $40,000 set aside for revaluation and would have to take any additional funds from surplus.
Resident Martha Witherell said they need to address the costs of maintenance on homes. Coming each year to revalue the houses is costly and Witherell wants to see the board get bids for the followup on houses that are having work done. She cited neighboring towns that were not paying nearly as much per hour as Peru has been paying.
Pulsifer said he had calls in for those towns to see how they handled maintenance and they would discuss it further next week.
During time allotted for public comment, Larry Porter complained he was stopped for not having a permit for his golf cart, which he uses for transportation. He has a health problem and had not applied for a permit from the town.
Parent said he never came in for a permit, but he could get one because she checked with Bureau of Motor Vehicles and Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and he could have one if he only used the cart to go from his home to his business.
