MEXICO — A Peru boy who was seriously injured in a collision with a tractor-trailer Monday afternoon is expected to make a full recovery, Lt. Roy Hodsdon of the Mexico Police Department said Tuesday.

Hodsdon said that according to preliminary reports, Daren Vachon, 15, was riding his bike west on Route 2 around 3 p.m. when he lost control of it and swerved into the rear wheels of a tractor-trailer driven by Daniel Jacobson, 48, of Sioux Falls, S.D.

Jacobson swerved into the adjacent lane, where a red 1977 Ford Ranger, driven by Timothy Campbell, 51, of Hartford, clipped the left rear bed of the tractor-trailer.

Vachon received a head wound and a broken neck, according to Hodsdon, and was immediately taken to Rumford Hospital. LifeFlight flew him to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

“According to his family, he received surgery this morning for the head injuries and the broken neck,” Hodsdon said. “He’s expected to make a full recovery.”

Neither Jacobson nor Campbell were injured, though Campbell’s Ford Ranger received about $1,000 damage.

The tractor-trailer was a 2002 International Eagle, Hodsdon said.

“I’m not sure where (Jacobson’s) destination was, but it wasn’t Mexico,” Hodsdon said. “He had an empty bed and he was just passing through town.”

Route 2 was closed for more than three hours while Maine State Police and the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office assisted in reconstruction of the accident. The Mexico Fire Department and Rumford Police Department assisted in redirecting traffic.

No charges had been filed as of Tuesday morning.
