GUILFORD — A street brawl involving 11 adults and juveniles with weapons resulted in one man suffering a gunshot wound and others injured from baseball bats and dog bites, according to the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department.

The sheriff’s office, along with Maine State Police and Dover-Foxcroft Police Department, are investigating the incident that resulted in four people going to a hospital Monday evening.

About 9:30 p.m. Monday, the sheriff’s department received a call about a person who had allegedly been shot at the intersection of Water and North Main streets.

Apparently, a group of nine adults and juveniles armed with baseball bats and knives confronted two males who were involved in a fight that occurred around July 4. Those two males were carrying baseball bats and accompanied by a Rottweiler dog.

“Both sides used baseball bats to strike each other, and the dog attacked two of the males,” according to a statement released from the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department. “One of the males attacked by the dog was armed with a 9mm pistol. Two shots were fired in the direction of the dog. The dog’s owner was hit by one round in the forearm.”

Four were taken to Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft — one for a gunshot wound, one for a broken arm and other injuries caused by being struck with a bat, another with serious injuries as the result of being hit repeatedly with a baseball bat and dog bites and the fourth person for dog bites, according to police.

None of the injuries are considered life threatening.

Two vehicles at the scene were reportedly impounded, while the dog was quarantined. Police recovered baseball bats, switch blades and more than a dozen other knives and bullet casings.

The incident stemmed from an attack on a young male around July 4, with more recently, an alleged series of fights in the Guilford area in the past few days, although none were reported to police, according to the press release.

Police have interviewed 13 people involved in Monday’s scuffle, but police have not said if anyone has been arrested.

“Because of the juveniles involved in this case and the complexity of determining the exact events, no names of involved individuals are being released at this time,” the sheriff’s department said in the statement.

The incident remains under investigation and will be reviewed by the district attorney’s office to determine what charges will be filed.

“The investigation has widened in scope to include all of the previous incidents and the sheriff’s office will continue to work with state police and other law enforcement agencies,” according to the release.
