CARTHAGE — A 15-year-old boy died Sunday evening while driving a small, motorized, two-wheel dirt bike, a spokesman for the Maine Warden Service said in a news release Monday.

The boy was carrying a coil of rope. While riding the bike, the rope became entangled in the rear wheel, and the boy became entangled in the rope as well, Cpl. John MacDonald said.

The teenager had been staying with friends.

Game wardens responded to Smith Road at about 8 p.m. Sunday regarding a fatal all-terrain vehicle accident.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

The body was transported to Meader and Son Funeral Home in Rumford for examination by the state Medical Examiner’s Office.

This case is being reviewed by the Franklin County District Attorney’s Office and remains under investigation, MacDonald said.

No further information was available Monday afternoon, he said.
