FAIRFIELD— Fairfield police are investigating the theft of about $3,000 worth of copper from four Central Maine Power  vehicles.

The copper, along with some other small items, was taken from the vehicles after a chain-link fence surrounding company property on Center Street was cut sometime over the weekend.

Chief Tom Gould said in a statement that the exact value of the copper lines taken still is being investigated, but police estimate it was worth several thousand dollars.

The two vans and two bucket trucks owned by the company were not damaged.

Gould tells the Kennebec Journal (http://bit.ly/1b8NAKK ) utility employees called the police around 7:30 a.m. Monday after they noticed the burglaries.
