SANFORD (AP) — Consultants are spending several days in Sanford to study the feasibility of building a year-round theme park in the southern Maine city.

WMTW-TV reported (http://bit.ly/18Wdwfg) that Sanford resident Allen Mapes and tourism specialist Bill Underwood raised $35,000 to bring the two consultants to Sanford this week.

Underwood and Mapes said they envision something different from the usual roller coasters and traditional thrill rides — an adventure park heavily branded to Maine.

The city kicked in $5,000 for the study. City Manager Steven Buck said the city needs to diversify its tax base, and a destination tourist attraction would be a great way to do it.
