WATERFORD – The Waterford Library will host its monthly Socrates Cafe from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5.

Lilo Willoughby, a volunteer with the library, said the Socrates Cafe is a monthly gathering to discuss current topics.

“Every month, a moderator is elected by those participating, and the moderator helps guide the discussion,” Willoughby said. “The topic can be related to anything, including politics or current events. Normally, the group of people who wish to participate will vote on what topic is selected.”

According to the official Socrates Cafe website, the cafe is a gathering where “people from different backgrounds get together and exchange thoughtful ideas and experiences,” with the idea that “we learn more when we question and question with others.”

Willoughby said the moderator of the August meeting will be resident Earl Morse, who has moderated several previous meetings. The topic is “Should We Limit Growth?”

Willoughby said the library will also host a reading by resident Amity Shlaes at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6. Shlaes is the author of “Coolidge,” a biography about Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president of the United States. The book debuted at No. 3 on the New York Times Best Sellers list.

“We try to get as many local writers into this program as possible,” Willoughby said.
