1919 – 2013

AUBURN — Julia B. Oakes, 94, of 440 Minot Ave., passed away Friday, July 26, at Clover Manor.

She was born in Auburn on May 29, 1919, daughter of the late Daniel Briggs Blanchard and Henrietta Ames Norton. She attended Auburn schools and married Richard Stanslow Oakes, who died on June 24, 1971.

Julia was employed for 35 years at the Berry Vegetable Stand, where she enjoyed sharing her recipes with her customers. She was a wonderful homemaker, cook and babysitter.

Julia was a member of West Auburn Congregational Church, Robin Dow Senior Citizens and the First Auburn Senior Citizens. 

She is survived by a son, Robert Eugene Oakes Sr. and wife, Cindy, of Oklahoma; a stepdaughter, Beverley E. Heath of Auburn; a brother, James F. Blanchard Sr. of North Carolina; a sister, Margaret J. Berry of Auburn; a sister-in-law, Delores Blanchard of Auburn; a special niece, Mildred Jones of North Carolina; and several other nieces and nephews; a grandson, Robert E. Oakes Jr. of North Carolina, who never missed an opportunity to visit his grandmother when in town; and many other grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-stepgrandchildren.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Austin N.H. Blanchard and Ralph D. Blanchard; two sisters-in-law, Mary and Elizabeth Blanchard; and a brother-in-law, Paul Berry.
