The Maine Maniacs 14-U girls basketball team pulled away from the Fredericksburg Focus with eight minutes remaining in the game to post a 46-29 win in their final Pool Play game at the U.S. Junior Nationals in Washington, D.C. Saturday afternoon.
Lake Region guard Spencer True and Auburn’s Emily Jacques led Maine with 10 points each, with True connecting on three 3-pointers. Jacques added six rebounds. Margaret Hatch of Greely scored seven points while South Portland’s Maddie Hasson scored seven points and recorded 4 assists and two steals. Sadie Nelson of Windham had four point and five rebounds and Mt. Blue’s Caitlin Kane scored four points, had 4 rebounds and earned three assists.
The Maine squad finished play Saturday evening at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center with a crossover game against a talented and undefeated 15-U Long Island “Basketball Results” team, losing 45 to 35. After a slow start, the Maniacs gave the older Results club a battle coming back from 20 points down to make a game of it in the second half. Don Lewis of Lawrence High School led the Maniacs with 17 points and added four rebounds. Maddie Hasson of South Portland scored seven points and had four rebounds. Emily Jacques of Edward Little High scored seven points and pulled down five rebounds while Windham’s Sadie Nelson had a team–high seven rebounds.
Maine finished 4-1 in their Pool and 4-2 overall.
