‘Puss in Boots’ on stage at UMF

FARMINGTON — Children’s Summer Theater Camp performances will be held Aug. 2 and 3, 7 p.m., Nordica Auditorium at the University of Maine at Farmington.

Tickets are available at the door: adult/senior $6, student/child $4.

This year’s performance is “Puss in Boots.”

Kingfield Methodist to host breakfast

KINGFIELD — A community all-you-can-eat breakfast is being offered from 7:30 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Kingfield United Methodist Church on High Street.

The menu will include homemade sausage gravy with biscuits, pancakes, French toast, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, home-fries, muffins, coffee and juice. The cost is $5 per person, all you can eat. A discounted rate is available for children.

PARIS — A bottle drive will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3, at VFW, 58 East Main St.

Legion to host dance, live music

PARIS — A dance with music by the Jones Dance Band will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31, at the American Legion Hall, 12 Church St. The cost is $5.

Monthly bean supper in Sumner

SUMNER — The Congregational Church of East Sumner will have the monthly first Saturday Community Supper at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3.

The meal will be beans and casseroles, rolls, coleslaw and cakes. Take-out is available by calling ahead (388-2610) or coming to the side door. Donations are requested for the meal. There will be raffle items available after the meal.

All proceeds benefit the work of the church, which includes the Sumner Food Bank and Youth Camp scholarships.

Program on Bean families Aug. 4

STRATTON — The Dead River Area Historical Society will feature “The Bean Families of Flagstaff and Dead River Plantation” on Sunday, Aug. 4, hosted by sisters Anna Bean Smart and Joyce Bean Perry. The sisters will share photographs, memorabilia and stories of growing up in Flagstaff and Dead River Plantation.

The Dead River Area Historical Society is open every weekend throughout July and August from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Displays include a collection of old carpentry and logging tools, china, glass, church organ, furniture from native families, a complete schoolroom, a memorial room to the “lost” towns of Flagstaff and Dead River, the lineage of several native families, and a host of memorabilia from native homesteads. Stephens alumni cancel luncheon

RUMFORD — The Stephens High School Class of 1958 will not have a monthly luncheon on Aug. 21 because the 55th class reunion will be on Aug. 24 at the Town and Country Inn, in Gorham, N.H.

Socrates Cafe is Aug. 5 in Waterford

WATERFORD — A Socrates Cafe gathering will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5, at the Waterford Library. Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month.

The group offers a forum to discuss current topics and ideas in a warm, friendly atmosphere, where divergent views will be welcome. Coffee and light refreshments will be served.

The topic for the August meeting will be, “Should We Limit Growth?” The moderator will be Earl Morse.

Course: ‘Parenting with dignity’ on Sept. 4

OXFORD — G.E.A.R. Parent Network will hold a 9-hour parenting education course, “Parenting with Dignity,” from 6 to 8 p.m. from Sept. 4 through Jan. 29,Tri-County Mental Health Services, 143 Pottle Road.

The program was developed by Mac Bledsoe, father of a celebrated New England Patriots quarterback. It helps parents learn effective techniques for raising responsible, independent children.

Pond association offers scholarship

PERU — The Worthley Pond Association is sponsoring a $500 scholarship to be awarded this year to a successful applicant. Applicants are asked to write, in 250 words or less, about “My Thoughts on Worthley Pond.”

To qualify for the scholarship the applicant must be a student enrolled in a college or university and been a member of the Worthley Pond Association or whose parents or grandparents have been Worthley Pond Association members for three consecutive years.

The time frame for the application submission is July 13 to Aug. 31, with the decision made by Sept. 15 and the award given the beginning of the second semester.
