FARMINGTON — Franklin County commissioners voted Monday to award the contract to pave the courthouse parking lot to a Smithfield company.

The company’s bid of $17,893 was the lowest of four bids submitted. Approval is based on the proposal meeting specifications and references checking out.

County Clerk Julie Magoon opened the sealed bids and gave them to commissioners to review.

The parking lot is on the corner of Route 4 and Church Street.

The paving project was eliminated from the budget last year. This year, the committee and commissioners approved $25,000 for the work.

The existing pavement on the lot will be reground and the pitch changed to improve drainage, and it will be repaved.

County custodian Greg Roux said he made nine calls for bids and received four back. Company representatives visited the lot to see what had to be done, he said.

Other companies submitting bids were Bruce A. Manzer of Anson, $22,900; Western Maine Paving of Norridgewock, $19,995; and Fine Line Paving & Grading of Madison, $21,379.

Commissioners also voted to go with Northland Custom Flooring of Farmington to do the first floor and the ramp at the county courthouse, contingent upon meeting specifications and references checking out.

Three vendors offered several options, from a lower-quality floor covering to a higher-quality commercial vinyl, Roux said. The higher quality would last forever, he said. The color goes all the way through and it would take less time to install. It would be low maintenance, he said.

He recommended commissioners go with the lowest quote.

Northland’s price is $9,194. Mattson’s Flooring and Window Treatments of Hallowell quoted a price of $10,250 and Bouffard’s Furniture and Carpet of Farmington, $10,773.

Commissioners tabled action on painting quotes for the courthouse hallways until the next meeting, Aug. 6.
