OTISFIELD — The Board of Selectmen has proposed replacing the decades-old oil furnace in the Town Office.
“It’s inefficient and it cost us a lot of money. It could stop running tomorrow,” Selectman Rick Micklon said at Wednesday night’s board meeting.
Micklon said he is proposing a possible switch to a propane-fired burner.
“The boiler’s been here since the building’s been here,” Micklon said.
According to information and photographs on the Maine Historical Society’s Maine Memory Network, Spurrs Corner School was moved around 1950 down Route 121 to East Otisfield, where it became a new wing for the 1920s Otisfield Central School. The school was renovated into the Town Office in the early 1990s.
Micklon said the board will look at several cost proposals to replace the boiler in the near future.
“I firmly believe the money we spend to replace the boiler will be saved in the change from oil to propane,” he said. “I think it’s on its last leg. There’s no sense in waiting for it to die this winter.”
Micklon said the board has been talking about replacing the furnace for the past five years.
