NEW SHARON (AP) — Investigators are now saying that driver inattention was the likely cause of a fatal traffic accident in New Sharon.

John Pelletier died at the hospital a day after his pickup truck was struck by a by a tractor-trailer as he pulled out of his driveway onto U.S. Route 2 on May 9.

Police also backed off initial statements that alcohol and a medical condition may have contributed to the death of the 62-year-old Pelletier.

Steve McCausland, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety, told the Morning Sentinel on Wednesday that the shift in investigators’ thinking was caused by preliminary information released by the medical examiner’s office.

The final report is pending.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was found not at fault and will not face charges.
