AUBURN — John T. Spruill said he plans to run for one of two at-large seats on the City Council, and he’s appealing to supporters to help him meet nomination requirements.

Spruill released a statement that is critical of current councilors.

“Shortsighted decisions like not supporting the Balloon Festival, Liberty Festival, closing fire stations and gutting the recycling program sends the wrong message about our city,” Spruill said.

In the statement, he promises leadership, vision and the ability to make difficult decisions.

Spruill said he is a disabled veteran who cannot walk door to door to collect signatures, and he appealed to residents to help him collect nomination signatures. Auburn candidates have until Aug. 22 to collect signatures for their nominating petitions. Candidates for mayor need to collect at least 100 signatures from registered voters living anywhere in Auburn. Candidates for City Council or the School Committee need to collect 25 signatures — from anywhere in the city for at-large candidates or from within individual wards for ward candidates.

The election is scheduled for Nov. 5. According to City Charter, terms for Auburn’s elected officials begin 45 days after the election, or Dec. 20.
