HARRISON — Old Home Days continued Thursday with carnival rides, food and an expected fireworks show from the middle of Crystal Lake.
The popular annual event kicked off Wednesday night with the Harrison Parks & Recreation Department’s 5K Run by the Lake that began at 7 p.m. in a downpour.
“Everyone is exhausted and still drying out,” Town Manager George “Bud” Finch said Thursday afternoon as he recuperated from the run.
Old Home Days was organized in 1923 and discontinued in 1967 before being revived 10 years later. It promotes community spirit and unity, and raises funds for organizations.
According to organizers, the event has raised about $110,000 the past 30 years and benefited local schools, libraries, Boy and Girl Scouts, town Recreation and Fire departments and the Christmas for Kids program.
Old Home Days continues Friday at 6 p.m. with the Junior Parade, which leaves the Fire Station lower parking lot and proceeds down Winslow Street, crossing Main Street into Crystal Lake Park. There will be prizes for all participants with recognition awards in four categories: walkers, bikes and trikes, wagons and floats and doll carriages.
On Saturday, the Grand Parade will step off at noon with the carnival midway opening at 12:45 p.m. The Grand Parade begins at Depot Street and will proceed up Main Street to the United Parish Congregational Church parking lot.
There will be local produce, food and crafts for sale at the Grange from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and breakfast and lunch will also be available.
The day also features antique autos in the church parking lot across from Crystal Lake Park and the Lions Club Chicken and Lobster Bake.
The event will conclude with music and dancing Saturday evening.
