BANGOR — An Auburn man is behind bars Tuesday after an altercation at the Tavern on Main Street, according to police.

Steve Baston, 28, was involved in a fight with another patron shortly before the bar closed at 1 a.m. Tuesday, according to Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards.

The fight started when for reasons unknown to police Baston grabbed a pool cue and struck his victim in the head with it, the sergeant said.

During the fight, another patron yelled “gun,” indicating that Baston had a concealed weapon, and people in the bar got on the floor. Edwards said a 9 mm pistol fell out of Baston’s waist as he fled the Tavern, and it was later found by police.

No shots were fired and the weapon was never aimed at any patrons, the sergeant said.

Bangor police Officer Derek Laflin was able to nab Baston just outside the Tavern, Edwards said. He was charged with threatening to display a dangerous weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and brought to Penobscot County Jail.

He remained at the jail Tuesday afternoon.
