Concerts in the Park to begin

OXFORD — Anderson-Staples American Legion Post 112 will host four Concerts in the Park starting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, with musical trio Lorraine Ouellette on accordion, Gerry Dube on guitar and vocals and Adrian LeClair on mandolin, guitar and vocals.

They have played for festivals, nursing homes and many other venues in the greater Lewiston and Auburn area. Their repertoire includes polkas, jigs and reels, country music and old-time songs.

Other dates are July 9 with The Tinpanics Steel Band, July 29 with Kora Temple Shrine Band, and Aug. 6 with The Maine Highland Fiddlers.

All concerts begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Oxford Veterans’ Memorial Park, Route 121 and the corner of Skeetfield Road.

Bring a chair. Refreshments will be available. In case of rain, the concert will be held inside the handicapped-accessible facility. For more information, call 539-4102.

Rotary auction, yard sale

BETHEL — The Bethel Rotary Club Annual Auction and Yard Sale will take place Saturday, June 29, at the Telstar Middle/High School. The yard sale begins at 8 a.m. The auction preview is at 5:30 p.m. with auction starting at 6:30.

The auction and sale is the organization’s most important event to benefit scholarships and other local community programs. The day features a huge selection of treasures, ranging from housewares to furniture, clothing, tools and more.

Alan Day presents ‘Light the Garden’

NORWAY — The Alan Day Community Garden will hold it inaugural summer event, “Light the Garden,” from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at the Garden, 26 Whitman St., across from the Norway Grange.

The event will celebrate the culmination and mark the end of a month-long online silent auction. The auction will be up and running until 8 p.m. during “Light the Garden.” Many supporters have donated unique and valuable items to this auction to support the garden and its work. There are gift certificates from local businesses, massages and body work, jewelry, books, art, vacation rentals and one-of-a-kind crafts. The auction is available to everyone online at alandaygarden.wordpress.com.

“Light the Garden” will include food, drink, music, candlelight, garden tours and conversation. Entertainment by local musicians Kathryn Gardner and Jordan Kaulback will highlight the evening. Tickets will be sold in advance at Books N Things or at the event on a sliding scale of $10 to $25.

Socrates Cafe meets July 1

WATERFORD — A Socrates Cafe gathering will be held at the Waterford Library from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, July 1. Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month. The group offers a forum to discuss current topics and ideas in a warm, friendly atmosphere, where divergent views will be welcome.

Coffee and light refreshments will be served.

The topic for the July meeting will be, “What Is Wisdom?” The moderator will be Jim Kearney.

Wayne church silent auction

WAYNE — A silent auction will be held from July 2 to 6 at Wayne Community Church, Old Winthrop Road.

A live auction on select items will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 6, with Craig Miller, WGME meteorologist. Items include getaways, restaurants, Red Sox tickets and more. Proceeds benefit local outreach programs.

Strawberry shortcake on 4th

FARMINGTON — The tradition of Fourth of July strawberry shortcakes continues. Whole, freshly-baked biscuits covered with fresh-picked Pike’s Farm strawberries and whipped cream will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., or until supplies run out, on the Pierce House Lawn, Main Street.

The cost is $4 each. Proceeds will benefit Farmington’s Old South First Congregational Church, UCC, outreach and community services and youth programs.

Fourth of July in Industry

INDUSTRY — The Fourth of July activities in Industry will include the following.

The annual Boat Parade will start at dusk Friday, July 5. A group paddle will start at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, July 6. Kayaks, canoes, etc., are welcome.

The annual fireworks will be on July 6, with a rain date of July 7. Cost is $10 per vehicle.

The Annual Meeting of the Clearwater Lake Association will be at noon Sunday, July 7. Bring your favorite food dish to share for the dinner. All interested people are invited to this meeting held at the Industry Town Hall.

Library book sale in Waterford

WATERFORD — The Waterford Library will hold its annual book sale on Wednesday, July 4, as part of the Waterford Village Independence Day celebration. The sale will be held at the library from 8 a.m. to noon and will include a large selection of hardcover and paperback books as well as a good selection of children’s books.

The library will be open during the hours of the book sale. Hard cover books are a bargain at $2, paperbacks will be available for $1 each.

Book donations are welcomed prior to the sale and may be left in the library lobby at any time.

The Waterford Library is on Routes 35/37 in Waterford Flat near the old town hall on Keoka Lake.

Workshops on canning, freezing

FARMINGTON — University of Maine Cooperative Extension has announced that two canning and freezing workshops will be held on Wednesday, July 17, at the UMaine Cooperative Extension Office in Franklin County, 138 Pleasant St., Suite 1.

The first workshop will be held from noon to 3 p.m. and the second will begin at 5:30 p.m. and end at 8:30. Registration is $15 and must be paid in advance.

The minimum number needed to hold the class is eight and the maximum per class is 15.

Participants will learn the basics behind home food preservation and food safety. This is a hands-on workshop where attendees will be canning mixed berry jam. Bring a pot holder to the workshop.
