BANGOR — A man hiding in the dark along Franklin Street early Sunday, grabbed a woman by the neck as she walking by and attempted to pull her down the Kenduskeag Stream Trail, Bangor police Sgt. Rob Angelo said Sunday.

“Possibly from the path, a male subject wearing a black hooded sweatshirt came out of the shadows and grabbed her,” the sergeant said of the 2:15 a.m. attack. “He grabbed her around the throat with both hands and tried to pull her down the path.”

The 30-year-old Bangor woman, who is slight in build, screamed and fought off the man and somehow was able to escape his grip. She lost her glasses and purse in the struggle and was able to make her way back to Franklin Street, where she flagged down a car driving by.

“She was very, very shaken,” Angelo said. “She was crying hysterically when the officer arrived.”

The woman, who was walking home from the Half Acre dance and nightclub on Harlow Street when the incident occurred, had a scratch on her neck from the mugging. Police found her glasses on the path, but discovered, “the suspect took off down the path with her purse,” Angelo said.

The purse, which contained about $100 in cash and her identification, has not been located, he said.

The sergeant issued a warning to those walking at night.

“Always walk with a friend,” Angelo said. “It’s scary. She did a good job of being able to fight him off — that is for sure.”

The incident is the second in two months involving a suspect who has threatened a woman and then gotten away. A still unidentified man with a knife threatened a 29-year-old woman on April 7, walking near Second Street Park.

The Bangor woman called police from her cellphone at about 10 a.m. to say she had been threatened by a man with a knife while walking her dog in the park.

She told police that a man came up behind her, grabbed her and “held onto her and told her to pretend they were together as he pulled her toward a cement wall,” Sgt. Paul Edwards said at the time.

The Bangor woman was able to get away from the man and ran down to the police station, which is three blocks away. A search was conducted for the man but he was never found.
