UNIVERSAL CITY, Texas — Mavis Mitchell Cleary, 72, from Universal City, Texas, formerly of North Yarmouth and a native of Temple, passed away on Wednesday, May 29, after a brief but intense illness.
She was the daughter of Howard and Wilena (Robinson) Mitchell of Temple. She attended Temple and Farmington schools and received her AA from Gulf Shores Junior College. She was married to Lt. Col. William O. Cleary Jr., and together they raised three sons, William III, Brian Dane and Patrick Shawn.
After her husband’s retirement from the U.S. Air Force, the family moved to North Yarmouth. Mavis worked for Portland Public Schools for 18 years, ending her career as secretary to the superintendent. In 2006, she moved to Texas to be closer to her children.
She is survived by her sons, William III and his wife, Ana Cleary, and Patrick and his wife, Cindy Cleary; three grandchildren, William IV, Christopher and Patricia Cleary; her brothers, Ronald and his wife, Jean Mitchell, and Arthur and his wife, Donna Mitchell; and sister-in-law, Louise Mitchell; a special aunt, Helen Bailey; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband in 1995; their son, Brian, in 1991; and her brother, Albert, in 1992.
