RUMFORD — Residents of the 12-town RSU 10 will have a chance to vote on a proposed $36.2 million budget for 2013-14 at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 30, in the Muskie Auditorium at Mountain Valley High School.

If voters approve all 22 articles that comprise the proposed budget as well as the district’s share of vocational budgets at the Region 9 and Region 11 schools of applied technology, along with a question seeking authority to return the district’s office in Buckfield to the town of Buckfield, residents will see a 2.95 percent increase over the current year’s figure.

If the May 30 budget vote passes, along with a validation of that figure at referendum in each town on June 11, RSU 10 towns would experience the following assessments. Also provided are the student population changes in each town from school year 2011-12 to school year 2012-13.

* Buckfield, up 2.71 percent, or $38,000, to $1,440,305; student population decreased by 24.5 students to 327.

* Byron, up nearly 3 percent, or $8,056, to $278,505; student population dropped by 3.5 to 24.5.

* Canton, down 1.6 percent, or -$11,183, to $679,443; student numbers dropped by 3.5 to 141.5.

* Carthage, up 2.7 percent, or $9,498, to $362,719; student numbers dropped by .5 to 91.

* Dixfield, down .55 percent, or $9,701, to $1,765,201; student numbers dropped by 9.5 to 447.5.

* Hanover, up 7.8 percent, or $19,421, to $268,736; student numbers dropped by .5 to 21.5.

* Hartford, up 1.2 percent, or $15,186, to $1,251,633; student numbers increased by 2 to 146.5.

* Mexico, down 4.6 percent, or -$60,420, to $1, 254,807; student numbers decreased by 3 to 400.

* Peru, down 3.67 percent, or -$57,212, to $1,505,338; student numbers dropped by 4.5 to 215.

* Roxbury, up 17.97 percent, or $71,478, to $469,283; student numbers increased by 6 to 28.5.

* Rumford, down 1.4 percent, or -$92,774, to $6,408,213; student numbers increased by 13 to 831.

* Sumner, up 2.3 percent, or $16,503, to $719,237; student numbers decreased by 6.5 to 123.5.

The amount assessed to each town is figured according to the number of students sent to RSU 10 schools and by the state valuation of each town. The valuations of Buckfield, Byron, Carthage, Hanover and Sumner increased, while the valuations of the remaining towns decreased.

Voters will be asked to act on a proposed $312,055 Region 9 adult and community education budget, of which the town would pay $167,468. They will also be asked to decide whether to authorize the district to issue bonds up to $88,000 for the purchase of a new school bus.
