WOODSTOCK — The University of Maine 4-H Camp & Learning Center will host its eighth annual Open House and Field Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 1.
Staff and volunteers will offer free activities for children of all ages and their families.
Summer Camp Director and registered Maine Guide Ron Fournier said the purpose of the open house is to “get kids and their families connected to the natural world and to have some outdoor fun.
“There are some kids who don’t want to do camp, but they love coming to the open house to participate in the activities we have to offer,” Fournier said. Among the activities offered this year are archery, fishing, canoeing and kayaking.
“Everything that we do during the open house runs concurrently with each other,” Fournier explained. “People can jump from one station to the next without missing anything.”
Fournier said there will be a station dedicated to geocaching where people you use a GPS to locate hidden treasures left by people. There will also be geology lessons in which children and their families can explore mines.
“The other day, we had a girl find a really nice piece of blue tourmaline,” Fournier said.
The Maine Warden Service will bringing a trained dog to demonstrate their abilities, and Larry Barnes, a local master falconer, will bring his falcon to talk about it.
Fournier said the open house has become a place for families to enjoy nature and have fun together.
“We accept any age group to come and enjoy the stations we have set up,” he said. “Some families come here and spend the entire day doing each station.”
