1938 – 2013

LEWISTON — Rev. Maurice N. Morin, 74, of Lewiston, died Friday, May 24, at Ouellette’s Adult Foster Home.

He was born in Lewiston on August 16, 1938, the son of the late Arsene and Yvonne (Tremblay) Morin. “Father Moe,” as he was known throughout Maine, attended Holy Cross Parochial School. He also attended Assumption Preparatory School, where he played for the hockey team. He went on to Assumption College for two years, and furthered his college education at the University of Ottawa at St. Paul Seminary, where he attained his theology degree.

He was ordained a priest on May 16, 1964, at the Cathedral in Portland by Bishop Daniel J. Feeney.

His first assignment was at Holy Name Parish in Machias as curate for the summer. Father Moe was also a curate at St. Peter’s Church in East Millinocket, St. Andre’s Church in Biddeford and St. Athanasius and St. John Parish in Rumford. He served as temporary administrator in Rumford, as well as St. John the Baptist Church in Winslow.

Rev. Morin became a pastor for the first time in December 1974 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in North Caribou, and served as pastor for St. Dominic Parish in Portland, St. Joseph Church in Biddeford and St. Gregory Church in Gray. Father Moe was chaplain of the Ursuline Sisters at Mount Merici Convent in Waterville, and served two years later as chaplain of the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament in Waterville. In 1997, he served as administrator of St. Ambrose Church in Richmond, and in 1999, he was pastor of St. Peter’s Church in Bingham. Rev. Morin became pastor of Notre Dame de Lourdes Parish in Skowhegan in 2001, and in 2007, he also served at St. Sebastian Parish in Madison and St. Peter’s Church in Bingham. “Father Moe” retired in August 2008 from the Holy Family Rectory, where he helped with the French Mass at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Lewiston and wherever else he was needed. He was also chaplain of many Knights of Columbus Councils as well as Daughters of Isabella Circles.

He is survived by his siblings, Jeannine Morin Chabot, Marcel Morin and his wife, Marguerite, Raymond Morin and his wife, Joan, and Robert Morin and his wife, Alma, all of Lewiston and Auburn; a godson, Normand Morin; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
