Chase Away Cancer 5K
RUMFORD — Relay For Life team Abbie’s Avengers will have the Chase Away Cancer 5K on Sunday, June 2, starting and ending at Mountain Valley Middle School.
Registration before or on May 23 is $20 and includes a T-shirt. Registrants any time after that pay $25 and do not get a T-shirt. Registry is online at active.com or click the link on the Chase Away Cancer 5K Facebook page.
There will also be a Tot Trot, which is one lap and $10 for early registration, $15 later; and a one-mile Kids Fun Run, $15 early, $20 later. All money raised will benefit the River Valley Relay For Life.
Koviashuvik open house
TEMPLE — Koviashuvik Local Living School will hold its Ice Cream Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 25. Tours will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The event is free.
Help turn the crank and make old-fashioned ice cream with ice from the ice house and cream from a local farm. There will be live music, delicious ice cream and tours of the school grounds. Tours include the stone root cellar, vegetable gardens, nut orchard, edible landscaping, earth-bermed greenhouse, rainwater collection systems, solar dehydrator, solar hot water system, alternative cooking technologies, composting toilet, the log cabin “mini home” and ice house.

Cary Library book sale, boutique
WAYNE — Cary Library will hold a book sale and boutique from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 25, and Saturday, June 1, at the Williams House, 14 Old Winthrop Road, across the street from the Cary Library.
The book sale and spring boutique are ongoing. Coffee, tea, homemade muffins, scones and quiche will be for sale. Newspapers, including the New York Times and the Boston Globe, are available.
The Wayne Conservation Commission will be on hand to talk about the natural history of Wayne and the “Wayne Naturally” map display currently on exhibit. The Library Quilt is on view.
Proceeds will benefit the Williams House, a property of the Cary Library.
Hospice training on May 29
BRIDGTON — Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice will offer general volunteer training at Bridgton Hospital from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 29.

Black and White Trail hike slated
RUMFORD — The Mahoosuc Land Trust will host a hike on its new Black and White Trail at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 1, beginning at the base of Black Mountain of Maine. The hike is part of the American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day.
The moderately strenuous 5-mile celebratory hike will be preceded by a brief opening ceremony. A lunchtime cookout on the trail will be provided and shuttle service from the base of Rumford Whitecap back to Black Mountain will be available.

SeniorsPlus plans focus group
NORWAY — SeniorsPlus will host a focus group in Oxford County from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, at the Second Congregational Church of Norway, to talk about aging services in rural Maine. This is one of two focus groups the agency plans to hold in order to assess the needs of older adults in the rural areas of Oxford and Franklin counties.
“We are looking for adults between the ages of 55 and 70 to join a conversation about aging services, specifically issues around accessing services in rural Maine,” said Connie Jones, director of Community Services for SeniorsPlus.
Residents of Oxford County who are interested in joining this conversation are asked to call SeniorsPlus at 1-800-427-1241 to sign up for the Oxford County Focus Group. As a thank you for participants’ time $25 gas or groceries gift certificates will be given.
