BOWDOIN — Boy Scout Troop 202 in Topsham has announced its newest Eagle Scout, Maxwell Negley. Max is the son of Marvin and Ruby Negley in Bowdoin.

The Eagle Rank is the highest level in Boy Scouting achieved by only one out of four Boy Scouts. Max joined Troop 202 in 2006. He worked toward his Eagle rank under the direction of four Scoutmasters while they led the troop: Frank Hudnor, Mike Farnsworth, Chris Bennett and Garey Hartley. Max received the prestigious award of Eagle under the leadership of Bennett, who was the recipient of Max’s mentor pin.

During Max’s tenure with Troop 202, he earned 26 merit badges, 12 which are Eagle Required, and the remaining 14 merit badges in areas of his interest. Twenty-one badges are required to earn the Eagle Scout rank. Max’s achievement of the additional five badges qualified him to earn the Bronze Eagle Palm. Max is also a member of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s National Honor Society.

For Max’s Eagle Service Project, he replaced the worn out “Welcome to Bowdoin” sign on Route 201 on the Bowdoin/Topsham line. Max raised funds for the project with bottle drives. His plan included replacing the sign and he added a rock garden at the base of the sign.

The original sign was hand crafted by Larry Adams to commemorate the Bowdoin Bicentennial celebration in 1988. The original sign has been returned to the Adams family.

Max is a home-schooled student. He also attends the Region Ten Technical High School, studying EMS and fire science. He will graduate from both programs in June. Max’s plans are to pursue a career in paramedicine and fire science. He is currently a volunteer for the Bowdoin Fire Department.

Max was celebrated in an Eagle Court of Honor on March 4 at the Bowdoin Baptist Church.
